What do I need to do?

This service requires you to send us your core crankshaft.  You need to place your order using the link above and then ship your crank.

Verifying you have the right core crankshaft:

You need a 8409 crankshaft that has not been previously ground.  The crank will have a 4 digit number stamped on it.

To check to see if the crank has been previously ground you will need to measure the main and rod journal diameters.  See the Corvair Chassis Shop Manual here:

Corvair Shop Manual PDF

Main 1 & 2 Main 3 & 4  Rod
Standard 2.0978" - 2.0988" 2.0983" - 2.0993"  1.799" - 1.800"

You are looking for minimal porosity and rust.  If the main or rod journals are smaller than listed above do not send the core crankshaft to us.  Your options are to find another core or pay the $250 core fee.

How do I pack it?

1.  Remove the rear gears (oil slinger, spacer and distributor gear) from the rear of the crankshaft using a gear puller.  You will reuse these once you get your crank back from us.

2.  Tag it with your name

3.  Spray with LPS3 or WD-40 and wrap in a plastic bag

4.  Pack in a box wrapped in an old piece of carpet, bubble wrap, foam and/or cardboard and put in a box.  Most important thing is that it cannot shift in the box.  Re-enforce the ends with cardboard.
